AMORPHOPHALLUS

In July 1998, the painter Tristan Soler and the photographer Sarah May arrived in Sumatra, where they set out on a trip that took them from Australia to the Himalayas, over more than seven months. In the heart of this Indonesian island, they met a Belgian naturalist, Filip Verbelen, a leading explorer of tropical rain forests, who shares a passion for bird watching. He helped them make a rare discovery: the Amorphophallus titanum, a giant flower that blooms for only a short time, in the pristine forest of the Kerinci Seblat National Park, where the gorgeous canopy is disappearing at an alarming rate. This floral encounter gave rise to a book in collaboration with the writer Louis Soler, in which each poem dedicated to this titan lily is accompanied by a painting by his son, Tristan Soler, which, in turn, serves as inspiration for the following poem…
